Software Developer

Building specialized systems for niche audiences.

I am Amit Kumar, a Software Engineer (Associate) at Goldman Sachs. I work full-stack across microservices and cloud platforms, turning complex domain problems into reliable, scalable software.

About

A developer who starts from the user.

As a Software Engineer at Goldman Sachs, I have contributed to Loans and Margin engineering, developing scalable backend platforms, full-stack applications, and production APIs that support critical trading and lending workflows.

Previously, I worked at Barclays and the LearnDialogue Lab, where I combined software engineering and HCI research to build practical, domain-specific tools and interactive systems. One of these projects, an interface that enables middle school students to create their own spoken conversational agents, is featured below.

I enjoy tackling problems that sit at the intersection of people and systems, and turning them into software that is reliable, usable, and built for the people who depend on it.

AMBY: AI Made By You

A conversational AI builder for middle schoolers

HCI ResearchUI DesignFull-stack DevelopmentConversational AI

AMBY lets middle school students build their own conversational agents. As the lead developer, I designed the interface and built the full-stack system from the ground up, starting with user research alongside students and teachers to understand how kids think about conversation.

I kept building alongside the students as they used it, refining the system through real classroom and camp sessions including Camp DIALOGS, an NSF-funded program. The work has since led to publications across multiple conferences.

Goldman SachsAugust 2025 - Present

Software Engineer (Associate)

  • Led full-stack development of a microservice managing entity data within the Loans Agency platform, which facilitates millions of dollars in transactions.
  • Designed and led an operational dashboard that cut production incidents by ~95% and reduced manual intervention. This freed developers for feature work and enabled clients to self-resolve cases, improving client productivity.
  • Drove development and enhancement of core margin calculation logic for a cloud-based platform powering margin lending for global wealth management clients.
  • Worked across Python/FastAPI, React/TypeScript, PostgreSQL, AWS, Java, Kafka, and Sybase, with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Copilot) embedded in daily workflows.

BarclaysFebruary 2023 - August 2025

Software Developer

  • Implemented new features in the bank's core risk engine, improving functionality across asset classes and ensuring consistent performance.
  • Designed a React Dashboard using TypeScript and Node.js, integrating JIRA and TeamCity to deliver real-time metrics and streamline collaboration.
  • Developed and enhanced Python-based regression testing tools, automating cross-version consistency checks and improving release quality.
  • Contributed to language bindings implementation using JNI, while utilizing scripting languages like Perl and Lua for fulfilling project requirements.
  • Utilized technologies including C++, React, Python, Typescript, Node.js, Java, Perl, Lua, JIRA, GitLab, Bitbucket, Docker, and OpenShift.

Graduate Research Assistant

  • Lead Software Developer: Spearheaded the creation of a full‑stack conversational AI development web application, AMBY, benefiting over 50 middle school students and providing impactful learning opportunities.
  • Developed system prototypes, focus group protocols, wireframes, and mockups for multiple research studies spanning around 70 middle school students.
  • Analyzed and reported results from multiple usability studies, resulting in three conference publications and one journal article.
  • Leveraged technologies such as React, MUI, Speech recognition, Dialogflow, Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB, AWS, Heroku, Figma, and SPSS.

Georgia Institute of TechnologyJuly 2018

Advanced Study and Research

  • Built a program to implement parallel programming algorithm on multi core systems using Java’s Fork/Join framework and tested its efficiency relative to single core system performance.
  • Documented and reported the followed procedure and the testing result for others students to refer to.
